SVD “Dragunov”

The SVD sniper rifle (Dragunov sniper self-loading rifle, Index 6V1) developed by E.F. Dragunov was adopted for service in 1963 and ever since that time it is still oper¬ational.
The automatic system of the rifle has a gas-operated unit with the short travel of a gas piston. The piston and the push rod are made separately and feature their own recoil springs. The recoil mechanism of the bolt carrier incorporates two springs. The barrel bore is sealed by three locking lugs of the rotated bolt.
The firing mechanism of a hammer-type is assembled in a separate housing. The thumb safety locks the trigger and sear and blocks the groove for the travel of an operating handle. The use of a hammer in the capacity of a disconnector is the salient feature of the rifle. Provision is made for the attachment to the barrel a cylindrical slit flash suppressor.

The rifle features a skeleton-type butt with an attached unadjusted face butt or «cheek». The handguards of a fore grip has a spring-assisted attachment to the barrel and the point of support of the fore grip is aligned with the axis of a bore of the barrel. The SVD rifle constituted the first complex of the sniper weapons of the new family: a sniper cartridge-especially developed rifle-especially developed sight.
On the rifle is mounted the 4x PSO-1 (1P43) sight. The updated SVDN or 6V1N3 night sights also may be mounted on the SVD sniper rifle. The ensured accu¬racy and a low dispersion shot pattern does not exclude the participation of the sniper in a close combat, if the need aris¬es. The SVD is intended to hit a man-size target at a range of 1,000 meters, a breast-size target at a range of 600 meters and head-size target at a range of 300 meters
