After creation of the AK-74M assault rifle at the «Izhmash», the Vyatsko-Polyansky Machine-Building Plant «Molot» had con¬ducted the proper updating of the RPK-74 light machine gun up to the level of the P.PK-74M light machine gun (Index 6P39).
The service life of the barrel was increased during firing with the new 7N10 cartridg featuring a bullet of enhanced penetration performance «PP» (its bullet of 3.56 g penetrates a 16 mm steel plate at a range of 100 meters, this cartridge permit¬ted to enhance the quality of the whole
5.45 family weapons); the receiver and its cover were reinforced; the stop of a guiding rod of the main spring was improved (in an effort to prevent the breaking off the receiver cover due to strikes and drops); the fore grip was also changed. The machine gun is outfitted with a folded to the left plastic stock. There are also ver¬sions chambered for the 7.62×39 (RPKM) and 5.56×45 NATO cartridges which evi¬dently intended for the export purposes, if only because theses cartridges are widely used all over the world.
