AKM

The 7.62 mm modernised Kalashnikov assault rifle (AKM, Index 6P1) was adopted for service in April 1959.
The AKM is a gas operated weapon. The sealing of a barrel bore is obtained by rotation of the bolt around its longitudinal axis via two locking lugs. During unlocking occurs a pre¬liminary turn and touch of a cartridge case in a chamber that facilitates its subsequent extraction. Inertia of the bolt carrier permitted to reduce the length of a moving system, while the «suspended» state of moving parts facilitated operation of the system even in the extremely dusty environment.

The firing mechanism is of a hammer type with its retarder. An integrated turning piece serves both as a selector and thumb safety lever of double action: it locks the trigger and sear and blocks the groove for travel of an operating handle. The assault rifle has a curve-slide sight.
The stock, fore grip and handguard are made from a plywood plate or plastic.

The AKMS (6P4) version has a folded metallic stock. The AKMN and AKMSN modi¬fications feature bracket to mount on the left side of the receiver night sights.
A compensator is attached to the muzzle part of a barrel of AKM, however, instead of the compensator may be attached the PBS-1.
The magazine with a checkerboard arrangement of cartridges is made from light alloy or plastic material.

The extremely high reliability and ease of handling have gained for the Kalshnikov assault rifle a world-wide reputation, ensured long life and high popularity. The AK and AKM are currently operational in more than 55 countries of the world (actual¬ly this weapon is being used in more than 100 countries). More than 15 countries are still producing Kolashnikov assaults rifles on the production lines the their own versions of AK and AKM.
