The continued employment of the Kalashnikov assault rifles and preference of their users to have an opportunity for their choice tell its own tale. The revealed shortcomings of foreign-made assault rifles that were widely used in the 1990s conflicts had inspired the hope for increased export capabilities of modern¬ized Kalashnikov versions.

In the early 1990s the «lzhmash» Plant commenced the development on the basis of
the AK-74M assault rifle several modifica¬tions of the Kalashnikov assault rifle cham¬bered for the most widely used in the world cartridges the 7.62×39,5.45×39 and 5.56×45 NATO. In an effort to regulate the number of all designations it was decided to name all «export» versions under the Index « 100».

The AK-101-5.56 chambered for the 5.56×45 NATO with plastic fire controls proved to be the first one. The night, opti¬cal and collimating sights may be mounted on the plate to the left side of the receiver.
The AK-102 small assault rifle is cham¬bered for the same cartridge with a more longer barrel as compared with the AKS-74U, consequently, the AK-102 maybe “segregated to the assault carbines-. The AK-102 sight is graduated only to 500 m what complies with the standards of the NATO countries. The flash suppressors from the AK-74, AK-74M and AKS-74U may be mounted on the AK-102.

The AK-103 actually constitutes a mod¬ification of the AK-74M chambered for the popular cartridge 7.62×39 (Mod. 1943).

The AK-104 is an analogue of the AK-102 chambered for the 7.62×39 car¬tridge and the AK-105 chambered for the 5.45×39 cartridge.

The AK-105 can be shipped complete with the firing mechanism providing for sin¬gle-shot, automatic, and fixed three-shot bursts fire.
