AGS-17

The 30 mm AGS-17 «Plamya» automat¬ic grenade launcher developed at the KBTM (Design Bureau) A.E. Nudlemanwas adopted for service in 1971 under the des¬ignation AG-17 (mounted version AGS-17, Index 6G10), the «Molot» Plant in the city of Vyatskie Polyany had launched the weapon in production.
This grenade launcher is chambered for the VOG-17 and VOG-17M splinter rounds (30×20). It features a quick-disconnected barrel. The grenade launcher is a blowback operated weapon, its hydraulic recoil com¬pensator makes the operation of moving parts smooth and reduces the rate of fire, thereby increasing the accuracy of fire. The reloading mechanism is ot a wire type.

The firing mechanism of a hammer type is located in assembly on the left side of the receiver and allows only for automatic fire with variable rate of fire. The hydraulic mechanism intended tor adjustment rate of fire is assembled in the linear travelling hammer and is being controlled by a thumb lever in two positions: maximum rate of fire within 350-400 rds/min and minimum rate of fire within 50-100 rds/min. The control levers of the AGS-17 are folded ones.
The AGS-17 is fed from a 30-round metallic belt with open links (normally are loaded only 29 rounds). The magazine feeding mechanism is of a lever type. The PAG-17 features an optical sight.
The fire is being delivered from the SAG-17 tripod mount by the shooter from sitting and kneeing positions. At a range of 400 meters the mean deviation of hittings accounts for 4.3 m in range and 0.2 m on front.
The AGS-17 is noted for its ease of operation and sufficient efficiency of fire. It is still operational in the Russian armed forces, former republics of the USSR and in a dozen of foreign countries as well.
