AEK-919K “Kashtan”

The SKB (Central Design Bureau) ol Kovrov Mechanical Plant (KMZ) had developed in the early 1990s the AEK-919 submachine gun chambered for the 9×18 PM cartridge. After a number of thorough updatings in terms of com¬pactness and safety in service came into being its version, the AEK-919K -Kashtan..
This is a blowback operated weapon. In so doing, use is made of the counterrecoil thrust configuration of the bolt, which envelopes the barrel from above and both sides, thereby reducing the size of the receiver and thus mak¬ing the weapon more compact. The barrel with polygonal rifflings is being removed from the submachine gun during its disassembly.
The firing mechanism of an assembly type ensures the single-shot and automatic arbitrary fire. The thumb safety-selector lever located on
the left side of the trigger guard selects the mode of fire. The fire occurs via release of the bolt from the sear of the firing mechanism, when the cartridge primer is pierced by the rigid firing pin The fired cartridge case is extracted by the spring-actuated extractor and then ejected by the rod-type ejector located on the damper bellow the guiding recoil-mainspring.
The bolt is cocked by the operating handle located on the left side, which remains station¬ary during the fire.
The submachine gun is fed from a box 20 or 30-round magazines. The opening for the mag¬azine is located in the pistol grip, thereby reduc¬ing time for the magazine’s change.

The sighting devices are of open type with a tumbling rear sight rated for two ranges: 50 and 100 meters.
The retracted stock has a revolving shoul¬der-rest. The vertical position of the shoulder-rest serves for firing from the shoulder while its horizontal position serves for firing from the bent elbow with the rest on the forearm.
The weapon is carried on the belt-loop with its both ends fastened to the sling swivel locat¬ed on the buttplate of the receiver.
The special custom-made submachine gun may be shipped complete with the silencer (PMS) screwed on the barrel to fire the weapon inside buildings and secrecy of combat actions. Besides, provision may be made, with an agree¬ment, for the plale to mount a reflector (colli-mating) sight and laser target designator.
