Designers of the OAO (Ltd.) «Kovrov Mechanical Plant» have developed the AEK-918 submachine gun on the balanced configuration chambered for the 9×19 car¬tridge.
Actually, the weapon operated on the bolt blowback principle.
The system of the balanced automatic operation with the counter-movement of moving parts allowed to compensate the strike of the bolt in its extreme points, and, thereby enhancing stability of the weapon during the fire as well as the low dispersion shot pattern in automatic mode of fire. The operating handle is located on the upper part of the weapon.

The firing mechanism is of the hammer type allows to deliver both single-shot and automatic fire. The rate of fire permits the shooter to cut the length of the bursts by his own volition. The thumb safety-selector is located behind the pistol grip.
The weapon is fed from the 30-round box magazine, its follower combined with the controlling pistol grip. The magazine latch is made in the form of a release but¬ton. Provision is made for use of the local 7N21 cartridge as well as the foreign made the 9×19 «luger» («para bellum») car¬tridges. The sight is fitted with a tumbling back-sight.
The plastic pistol grip, fore arm, and trigger guard are integral.
The light stock with a plastic rest shoul¬der is folded to the left.
