The SR5 and SP.6 (9×39) cartridges with heavy subsonic low recoil impulse and low ricochel-prone bullets (this facilitates the use ot a silencer) proved to be the most useful for shortened assault rifles. The 9A-91 short¬ened assault rifle was chambered for these bullets at the KB Instrument Design Bureau by a team of developers headed by V.P. Gryazev.ln doing so, they made the weapon that didn’t exceed the measure¬ments of a conventional submachine (pistol-machine gun), paid a great deal of attention to the production-economic parameters of this shortened assault rifle in a bid to made it more simple and cost-effective in production, thereby assuring its preference on the part of the customer. At the same time the PAB 9×39 more cheap cartridge was also developed.

The A-91 shortened assault rifle operates via a gas driven unit, its gas chamber is extend¬ed forward to ensure more travel length for a piston rod. The barrel bore is sealed by four locking lugs of the bolt. The hammer-type firing mechanism ensures single-shot and automat¬ic fire. The thumb safety-selector is located on the left side and its lever blocks the groove intended for passage of an operating handle.
The magazine is of a box-type, straight form with a checkerboard arrangement of cartridges. The fore grip and pistol grip are made from cast strike-proof plastic. In an effort to reduce the weapon’s width provi¬sion is made for a folded in the upper-for¬ward position stock and a collapsible operat¬ing handle. The weapon with its folded stock features the 372×188x44 cm dimensions. The SP.5 and PAB-9 bullet fired from the 9A-91 assault rifle at a range of 400 meters is able to assuredly defeat a live target in an armor vest of average level of protection. The detachable aids comprise a collimating sight and an expanded type silencer (PAB).
The 9A-91 assault rifles have been provid¬ed since the year 1994 for the law enforcement agencies, the KBP and Kovrov Mechanical Plant are responsible for their production.
