The creation of this weapon commenced in the framework of work on an Army pistol according the project «Gratch» and had sever¬al stages. The SPS pistol was chambered for the cartridge RG052 by the team of designers at the TsNII “TOCHMASH* (Central Research Institute) in the city of Klimovsk, including A.B. Yuriev and LP. Kasyanov. Designers P.I. Serdeukov and l.B. Beiyaev had developed by the year 1993 the RG055 pistol, known also as the «Gyurza» pistol. The updated SP.1 «Vektor» pistol chambered for the SP.10 (7N21J cartridge was developed in 1996. And at last in the year 2003, made its appearance the SPS «self-loading Serdeukov pistol-(Index 6P53) adopted for service of special purpose units and new cartridges, including the 7N28 with a low ricochet bullet weighing 7.9 g, the 7N29 with an «armor-piercing» bul¬let weighing 6.7 g and the 7BT3 with an armor-piercing tracer bullet weighing 6.7 g. A bullet of the 7N29 cartridge securely defeats targets outfitted with individual protection.
The pistol acts on the blowback principle of a short barrel-slide with a free motion and the locking of its bore is assured by a verti¬cal rocking barrel latch. The firing mecha¬nism is of a hammer type with a torsion mainspring assembled in the hammer recess. The pistol can be fired with prelimi¬nary cocking or with self-cocking. There are two automatic safety levers. The first one in the form of a key arranged behind the pistol grip and can be switched off by the palm of a hand. And the second one constitutes a small lever on the trigger itself and is switched off before the trigger pull.
The pistol receiver is fitted with a metallic insertion. The trigger guard is designed to hold the pistol during the fire with two hands. Sighting aids are fitted with white insertions. Magazine is of a dual-row type. To speed up the rate of reloading a spring elevator ejects the magazine while pressing on its latch and a slide stop is automatically switched off while attaching a full loaded magazine.
