PSM small self-loading pistol

The pistol was developed at the TsKIB SOO (Tula-based Central Design Bureau) by the team of designers, including T.I. Lashnev, A.A. Simarin and L.L Kulikov, chambered for the 5.45×18 MPTs cartridge developed in the TsNIITOCHMASH, Klimovsk-based Research Institute, by A.D. Denisova. The new pistol complex intended for operative agencies of the MVD (Interior Ministry) and KGB (State Security Committee) as well as for high ranking officers was adopted for service in 1972. The Izhevsk Mechanical Plant launched it in production.
The 5.45mm bullet penetrates at a range of 8 meters some 40-45 layers of polyamide kevlar or SVM (that is an armor vest of II level of protection). However, the bullet chambered for the PM Makarov pistol clearly outperforms the PSM bullet in terms of its terminal effect due to its small weight.
The PSM is the barrel-slide blowback operated weapon. The pistol features a firing mechanism with an open hammer and coil mainspring. The firing mechanism ensures a single-shot fire both with preliminary cocking and self-cocking. The arrangement of the thumb safety lever over the upper part of the barrel-slide allows to release a safety pin and cock the hammer by one move of the thumb of the hand which holds the pistol or to do this by the palm of the other hand. The hammer features a safety cocking. The thumb safety locks a sear and a trigger in the forward position and simultaneously releases the hammer from the sear notch, thereby blocking the firing pin from the action of the hammer.
The updated version of the PSM pistol is noted for its more increased in length and width plastic sidepieces of the pistol grip, which make the handling of the pistol in a more convenient way. The export variant of the pistol is being produced under designation of the lzh-75.
