The OTs-21 pistol nicknamed «Malish» (little one) developed by Yu.l. Berezin constitutes one of the variants of a «pocket» pistols chambered for the 9×18 PM standard cartridge designed to provide small portable weapon with high stopping or terminal effect.
The pistol is the slide blowback operated weapon. The recoil spring is located under the barrel. The pistol has simple streamlined features. The firing mechanism with an enclosed hammer operates only by dint of self-cocking, so no provision is made for any sorts of special safety levers, if only because a considerable effort of the self-cocking must serve as a warrant from an accidental shot. The sighting devices are made in the form of a rectangular groove along the upper edge of the barrel-slide. The extractor is arranged in the opened
form and it can be easily determined even by the mere touch and in this way serves as an indicator of the presence of a cartridge in the chamber.
The rear edge of a pistol grip features a bend for an accommodation of a flashy part of the shooter’s palm. The magazine capacity is rated for five cartridges and that’s enough for a «fast moving deadly contacts The plastic pad of a magazine floor plate serves as a support of the hand of a shooter. The magazine catch is located below the grip. A 5.45mm variant of this pistol (Kulikov design) features a magazine of larger capacity.
The radius of a hit dispersion at a range of 10 meters constitutes 60 mm. Like a number of other pistols, the OTs-21 pistol is being offered in a «service» modification OTs-2lS chambered for the 9x 17 “kurtS” (9x 17K) cartridge.
